METAMORPHOSIS : BUTTERFLIES
Learning about the butterfly cycle
Our students picked caterpillars from the milkweed plants in our butterfly garden and placed a number of them inside an empty aquarium with a screened cover.
The children quickly discovered that caterpillars had an extraordinary appetite and were fascinated at the amount of leaves the caterpillars consumed daily. As the days went by, they observed the caterpillars getting larger and larger. The children had previously learned about the stages of metamorphosis and were able to witness each stage take place. They were mesmerized at the chrysalis stage where they were able to see the individual caterpillars spinning their own silk cocoons!
After a few weeks, excitement filled the entire school as all the children crowded around the tank to watch the butterflies emerge. It was a great experience for the kids and teachers. It is definitely a project that we will continue for years to come.
